Tami Kochan, RN, MSN, CPNP, AE-C, is a certified asthma educator and lecturer. Tami has helped countless families learn about asthma and how to effectively manage it. In “A Day in the Life,” a recent asthma publication she co-wrote, Tami discusses many helpful asthma tips and strategies for parents:
Many children do not express discomfort with their parents, unless it is severe. This is why it is important for parents to be proactive and keep an eye out for common asthma symptoms in their child. If you believe that your son or daughter may be suffering from asthma, only a reputable pediatrician can provide a proper diagnosis. Common symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing, fatigue, tightness in the chest, and intolerance for physical activity.
Help Your Child Understand Their Symptoms
Not all children are able to accurately understand their symptoms. It is important for children with asthma to be aware of their symptoms so they can manage them better. You can help your child develop a comprehensive understanding with a few different methods. For starters, describe symptoms as simply as you possibly can to your child and point to parts of their body that are vulnerable to discomfort, such as the throat and chest. In addition, you can make learning more fun by using images or asking your child to draw or write about what asthma feels like for them.
Symptoms of asthma should never be ignored. Your child must report his or her symptoms to you or another adult when you are not available as soon as they experience them. If your child is old enough to manage their symptoms without adult intervention, an asthma specialist can discuss techniques with them. Many asthma sufferers require rescue medicine to control their symptoms, but only a pediatrician will be able to provide the proper medicine for your child’s needs.
